National Hispanic Heritage Month:
Celebrating Culture, Community and Family
Every year from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a great time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The celebration begins on September 15th because it marks the independence anniversaries of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th, making mid‑September a vibrant time of pride and unity across the Americas.
💃 Why It Matters
Hispanic Heritage Month reminds families that diversity is one of America’s greatest strengths. It’s a chance to learn about the art, music, food, and traditions which have shaped communities across Metro Atlanta and beyond, from Latin festivals to local restaurants and cultural exhibits.
For families, it’s also an opportunity to teach children about inclusion, respect, and the beauty of multicultural storytelling.
🎨 Family Ways to Celebrate Across Metro Atlanta

👵 Multigenerational Connections
Invite grandparents or older relatives to share stories about cultural traditions, travel, or favorite foods. Record these conversations to preserve family history and celebrate shared heritage.
🌈 Celebrate Through Community and Creativity
Families across East Atlanta, Decatur, and College Park can find joy in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by connecting with local communities, supporting Latino‑owned businesses, and learning something new together. Whether you dance to Latin beats, paint papel picado banners, or enjoy a family meal inspired by Mexico or Peru, every activity helps children appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make Atlanta shine.
🧡 Keep the Celebration Going
Hispanic Heritage Month may last only 30 days; however, its lessons last all year. Encourage your family to keep exploring by visiting cultural festivals, learning Spanish phrases, or volunteering with local organizations that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
